What Are Comments?

When adding or removing a tag through the Tag History extension, you can leave an optional comment explaining the reason for the change. The comment is saved alongside the history entry and visible to anyone viewing the tag timeline.

Why Use Comments?

Tags often drive important workflows — fulfillment, segmentation, automation, discounts. A comment answers the question: why did this tag get added or removed? Examples:
  • fraud-review added → “Flagged by payment provider, pending manual review”
  • wholesale added → “Approved wholesale account — confirmed by sales team”
  • vip removed → “Subscription lapsed, moved to standard tier”
  • exclude-from-email added → “Customer opted out via phone call with support”

How to Add a Comment

Comments are added at the same time as a tag change — there’s a comment field available whenever you add or remove a tag through the extension. When adding a tag:
1

Type the tag name

Enter the tag in the input field in the Tag History block
2

Add a comment

Type a note in the optional comment field below the tag input
3

Click Add

The tag is saved with your comment attached to the history entry
When removing a tag:
1

Click the tag you want to remove

In the current tags list, click on the tag badge
2

Add a comment in the confirmation dialog

The removal confirmation dialog includes an optional comment field
3

Click Remove

The tag is removed and your comment is saved with the history entry

Where Comments Appear

Comments are shown inline in the tag history timeline, directly beneath the change entry they belong to. Anyone with access to the entity in Shopify Admin can read them.
Comments can only be added at the time of a tag change. You can’t add or edit a comment on an existing history entry after the fact.

Comments in CSV Exports

If you export your tag history to CSV, comments are included in the Comment column for every entry that has one. Entries without comments have an empty cell.
