What does Tag History actually track?
It tracks every time a tag is added to or removed from an order, product, or customer in your Shopify store. Each change is recorded with a timestamp and — when made through the extension — the name of the user who made it.

Yes. Tag History detects changes via Shopify webhooks, so any tag change — whether made by another app, a CSV import, an API call, or your team — is recorded. The only difference is attribution: changes made outside the Tag History extension show as “Shopify Admin” rather than a specific user name.

No. Tag History runs in the background and does not interact with your storefront or checkout process in any way.

Yes. From the Settings page you can enable or disable tracking for each entity type independently.

Each individual tag addition or removal counts as one change. If you save an entity that adds 2 tags and removes 1, that’s 3 changes against your monthly limit.

New tag changes are not recorded until the 1st of the following month (or until you upgrade). Existing history remains fully accessible — you can still view it in the dashboard and extension blocks.

Tag history is stored indefinitely while the app is installed. There is no expiry date. All data is deleted when the app is uninstalled.

Tag History can only record changes that occur after installation. There is no history for tag changes that happened before the app was installed.

Yes. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Tag History stores only tag change events and Shopify user identifiers — no customer personal data beyond what’s contained in the tags themselves.

Why do some changes show 'Shopify Admin' instead of a user name?
“Shopify Admin” means the change was detected via webhook — it was made through Shopify’s native tag field, another app, a bulk edit, or the API. Shopify doesn’t tell us who made the change in those cases.To capture user attribution, use the Tag History extension block to add or remove tags instead of Shopify’s built-in tag field.

Can I see which staff member made a change?
Yes, when the change is made through the Tag History extension block. The logged-in user’s name is captured and shown in the history timeline.
